In 2005 and 2006, Bulgarian Railways began operating Desiro trains on a total of 25 diesel trains under a €67 million agreement with Siemens AG. [2] As of 22 March 2006, 16 trains had been delivered, many of which ran on the Sofia-Kjustendil-Sofia line. Another €117 million contract for 25 EMUs was also signed with Siemens AG. The EMUs have been equipped in Varna, where BDZ and Siemens AG intend to set up a joint venture. EMUs are called classes 30 and 31 and serve traffic in the Sofia and Plovdiv areas. The Desiro City has been specifically designed for the commuter market in the UK, where rail operators and commuters face enormous challenges. Commuters need to connect suburbs and cities and offer fast and punctual service in city centers. This requires flexible and innovative systems that make the most of available resources. Russian Railways (RZD) has already ordered a fleet of 54 Desiro RUS trains. Specific operational requirements had to be taken into account, as well as the climatic conditions of Russia, the rules of homologation and various infrastructure and operating conditions. The vehicles are designed to withstand temperatures down to -40°C. The ground height, bogies and track gauge were also adjusted. Since some railway lines are electrified in Russia with 3 kV DC and others with 25 kV AC, the Desiro RUS is equipped with two-voltage power clamping equipment.

This allows uninterrupted circulation on lines equipped with mixed power supply systems and offers maximum flexibility. The same goes for the interior architecture and passenger capacity. The DESIRO HC EMUS incorporate an elegant and high-quality interior. The first class seat distribution has 36 adjustable seats with reading lamps and folding tables. The vehicles offer wide wagon passages that allow passengers to quickly access all areas of the train. In the heart of London, trains will offer 80 per cent more seating. The Swiss Federal Railways operate two- or two-stage EMUs of the SBB RABe 514 range. They are used as commuter trains in Zurich, as part of the Zurich S-Bahn, where 61 four-part sets have been in service since 2006. The Desiro HC is equipped with an innovative infotainment system and high-resolution CCTV cameras for passengers.

WI-Fi and electrical outlets are available in all train cars. Siemens has delivered 54 Desiro RUS trains to the Russian Railways (RZD). Slovenian Railways operates 30 Desiro electric units called Desiro EMG 312 SR 31E. They are used as commuter trains on electrified lines, that is: from Ljubljana to Koper, Jesenice (via Kranj), Maribor and Dobova (via Zidani Most). Siemens expects the entire life of the vehicles, which is more than 30 years. About 98.5% of the train is recyclable…
